A Sky TV insider says Neon is now "just inches away".
The Netflix clone will launch before the end of this week (for more details, see NBR's print edition tomorrow morning. As NBR types, the NeonTV website has done into admin mode, possibly because it's transitioning from a brochure site to live service.).
She also confirms that Sky TV will have a marketing partnership with Vodafone - the logical move to counter Spark making its $15/month Lightbox service free to all 600,000 of its residential customers for 12 months.
Details are still under wraps, but an update to a Vodafone terms and condition page spills key details.
As rumoured, it's a more modest-scale deal.
Those who sign up to a Vodafone unlimited data plan and home line will get Neon (normally $20 a month) free for six months. The catch is they must sign a 12-month contract with a $299 break fee. For the second six months of that contract, the customer pays $10 a month for Neon.
An earlier Vodafone website leak indicated the offer would not be open to Vodafone customers who are already on the free MySky HDi plan - a smart move for Sky in terms of protecting its traditional business, though not so great for Neon making a big-bang impact.
Sky TV will also debut its new Fanpass service this Friday, which will let viewers stream Super Rugby, NRL games or Forumula One races with an online subscription that costs $19.90 a week, $69 a month or $299 a year, and uses the same NeuLion interface deployed by Lightbox Sports (incorporating the old Coliseum Sports Media). More details in NBR print tomorrow.
