Crown to take over in Banks case

Crown Law has confirmed it will take over a prosecution against ACT leader John Banks from the retired accountant who pursued the case privately.

Mr Banks is currently seeking an Auckland High Court  review of the Auckland District Court decision to commit him to trial for knowingly filing a false election return. That case had been taken by retiree Graeme McCready.

Mr McCready told NBR ONLINE Mr Banks has filed his proceedings and the first call for the case will be next Thursday.

Mr McCready says he is happy Crown Law has taken over and he has great confidence in the solicitor general.

An Auckland barrister has already offered to represent Mr McCready in proceedings if the Crown did not take over.

Mike Lloyd says he has not been involved in the case until this point but will help Mr McCready for nothing.

He says there is nothing complicated about the cas, and contacted Mr McCready as it was "a decent thing to do."
