Embattled former politician Colin Craig was ordered to pay $128,780 in damages to his former press secretary, Rachel MacGregor, after he publicly humiliated her.
Ms MacGregor laid a sexual complaint against Mr Craig to the Human Rights Tribunal but Mr Craig deliberately breached the confidentiality of the private settlement to attract maximum publicity, according to a decision by the tribunal.
Ms MacGregor’s lawyer, Linda Clark, said at a press conference it was very “distressing and upsetting” for Ms MacGregor to have her complaint against her former employer made public.
It should never have been made public because it was a sexual complaint, Ms Clark said.
The finding by the tribunal in March was suppressed until today, following a jury trial where Mr Craig was found to have defamed Taxpayers’ Union executive director Jordan Williams.
Mr Craig was ordered to pay Mr Williams $1.3 million in damages but indicated he will appeal.
