An Auckland man has appeared in the Auckland District Court charged with trying to bribe an Auckland Council resource consent officer.
Johnson Yuejun Li was charged with bribery and corruption by the Serious Fraud Office over his November application to subdivide a Hillsborough property.
The SFO says the council consents officer acted promptly in reporting the attempted bribe and although the sum involved is not significant, the attempted bribery is of primary concern.
It is not known whether he has yet entered a plea. He will appear in court again on April 14.
Director Julie Read says the SFO prioritises corruption and bribery to protect New Zealand’s reputation as a safe place to invest and do business.
Under the Crimes Act conviction on a bribery and corruption charge can mean seven years in jail.
