A Serious Fraud Office (SFO) prosecution has resulted in a former immigration official and his associate being sentenced in the Auckland District Court today on corruption and bribery charges.
Meng Yam (Peter) Lim, an ex-border control officer, received eight months’ home detention, while Kooi Leng Pan received six months’ home detention.
Between February and April 2013 Mr Lim colluded with Ms Pan to corruptly accept $26,500 from two individuals for the provision of immigration assistance.
An internal Immigration New Zealand investigation into the matter was referred to the SFO in August 2013, and the two pleaded guilty to charges in July.
In a statement SFO director Julie Read said, “Corruption is not a way of life in New Zealand. We have a deserved reputation as one of the least corrupt countries in the world and as the lead investigative agency in relation to corruption, the SFO is committed to investigating and prosecuting offending in New Zealand in order to uphold that reputation.”
