Broadcaster and columnist Jesse Mulligan is to host the Afternoons programme on Radio New Zealand National.

The slot used to be held by Simon Mercep, who was confirmed to have left the public broadcaster last week.

Head of radio John Howson said he expected the former Seven Sharp host to bring a "new and exciting flavour to the Afternoons show."

“We’re thrilled that Jesse is joining us. He has done a great job filling in on Afternoons in the past and listeners can look forward to his invigorating fresh approach when he starts as the permanent host on Monday July 27.”

Mr Mulligan started out in student radio while completing his law degree at Waikato University. He spent 10 years as a commercial radio breakfast host in Wellington and Auckland.

He writes restaurant reviews for Metro, hosts the late night TV One comedy show Best Bits and does stand up comedy among other jobs. His column in the Sunday Star Times was recently replaced by David Slack.

Mr Mulligan says he is "looking forward to bringing a new perspective to the Afternoons slot, while upholding the excellent traditions of New Zealand’s favourite radio station."
