Colin Craig's spoof campaign raises $50K in a day

This morning, Colin Craig's Conservative Party a website mimicking the Greens call to fund Russell Norman’s defamation defence.

The Green co-leader is trying to raise $75,000 to cover his legal costs as he defends a defamation action launched by Mr Craig.

This afternoon, Mr Craig said a goal to get 500 pledges and raise $50,000 had already been exceeded. 

Mr Craig, who earlier told NBR readers he is worth around $5 million, says his supporters "want to be part of holding Mr Norman to account."

At the Big Gay Out in Auckland, Dr Norman told an audience, including TV crews who later broadcast his comments, "A vote for John Key is a vote for Colin Craig. Now the thing about Colin Craig is he thinks that a woman's place is in the kitchen and a gay man's place is in the closet." 

Mr Craig told media that three of the five staff he employs at the Conservative Party are women, and he would have no hesitation in employing a gay person either.

Dr Norman has refused to apologise. The Green co-leader says earlier public statements by Mr Craig support 

Conservative leader Colin Craig is splitting his defamation suit against Green Party leader Russel Norman into two parts in the hope the first claim will be decided by the courts before the election.

Following advice from his legal team, Mr Craig will “proceed immediately against Mr Norman regarding his claims about the place of women,” he says in a statement.
