Clemenger network nabs indie agency, plans further expansion

The move is modelled on successful set-ups within the network such as Colenso BBDO and Clemenger BBDO's relationship with Proximity NZ.

Clemenger Group has acquired specialist direct agency justONE in a move it says will expand its retail offering.

justONE will be paired with Clemenger Group’s .99 in a deal which Clemenger Group chief executive Jim Moser believes is geared to the future of retail marketing.

He says the move is modelled on successful set-ups within the network such as Colenso BBDO and Clemenger BBDO’s relationship with Proximity NZ.

The network is in discussions for another acquisition which he hopes to close by July 1. He declined to comment further but says the deal is in an area which the network does not operate in but will be key to its offering in the New Zealand market.

The network’s other most recent acquisition was Wellington-based Touch/Cast 18 months ago.

“We continue to invest in New Zealand because we see it is a strong market,” Mr Moser says.

The acquisition means justONE founder Ben Goodale will become the managing director across both companies, while .99 founder Craig Whitehead will be the chief creative officer across them.

Mr Moser says there will be no other staff changes at this stage. The shift will see justONE’s 20 employees move to the Richmond Rd offices where .99’s 110 staff are located.

He declined to comment on how much was paid for justONE, other than to say money changed hands. Mr Goodale will take a shareholding in the Clemenger Group mid-year.

The agencies already share several accounts, including Farmers, which they have worked on together for more than five years. justONE and .99 also work together on Foodstuffs and Genesis.

Mr Goodale says the agencies have helped each other out several times and the revamp is about really about synergy.

“The two agencies will be stronger together. I’ve always viewed .99 as a sister agency from day one. It’s not like its two strangers coming together.”

Mr Moser says client reaction had been positive but would not confirm which .99 clients will come across to justONE or vice versa.
