Chorus [NZX: CNU] has moved additional technicians to Auckland and Waikato, and is recruiting ex-technicians from companies such as Fisher & Paykel, to tackle winter faults.
Earlier this month, the listed lines company said it was experiencing the “usual spike” in the number of weather-related faults for its copper line network, which delivers ADSL and VDSL internet as well as landline services.
Chorus released the statement in response to Spark [NZX: SPK] groaning about long wait times for its customers and blaming Chorus’ aging network for an increase in faults.
In its first weekly performance update on fault restoration, Chorus says there were almost 35,000 faults logged in the month to date, with 99% restored and the average time being 62.7 hours.
Last week the company said it is looking for 250 more technicians and support staff by the end of the year.
“This is to help meet the demands it faces across its copper and fibre business, despite nearly 2000 people already being added to the workforce since 2011,” Chorus says.
