Building improvement DIY giant Bunnings has been granted permission to open up in the Auckland suburb of Grey Lynn despite strong local opposition.
However, the decision of the Auckland Council hearing commissioners Greg Hill, Trevor Mackie, Janine Bell and Ken Baguley, comes with conditions.
Bunnings sought to build a retail site including associated parking, loading servicing and landscaping. The proposed gross floor area is 8430sq m. Bunnings has said it will employ 120 staff, probably locals.
Hearings, which took place last month, heard 51 submisisons on the plan, one of which was neutral. The rest opposed the construction.
The commissioners said in their decision the proposed building was different from what was usually associated with a standard Bunnings Warehouse and the consent came with conditions for the scale of activity and effects.
Conditions will include limiting the days, hours and numbers of delivery vehicles. They will also affect noise control.
The decision said the proposal will contribute to a "diverse and compatible mix of activities" in the urban plan and satisfied the design criteria set out in the district plan.
Objectors have 15 working days to file an appeal to the Environment Court.
