Bridges clocks lowest Newshub-Reid poll rating of any National leader for a decade

Mixed news for both major parties in post-Budget poll.

Sun, 27 May 2018

A post-Budget poll by Reid Research for Newshub has found neither major party has moved significantly.

NZ First continues to be well under 5%, which would leave the Green Party as the kingmaker if an election was tomorrow (which of course it won't be; NZ First support always ticks up around actual ballots).

Simon Bridges is on 9% in the preferred prime minister stakes, the lowest rating for any National leader over the past 10 years of Reid polling. It compares to John Key's preferred prime minister rating of 24% in his first Reid poll after taking over as the leader, and Bill English's 25% at the same point.

Judith Collins, recently in the news for outing Transport Minister Phil Twyford for a pre-flight phone call, appears on Reid's radar for the first time with a preferred PM rating of 3.7%.

Jacinda Ardern's preferred PM rating is 40.2%.

Winston Peters, who will take over as acting prime minister after the 'First Baby' arrives, slips to 4.6%.

A Reid poll taken shortly before the election put then National leader Bill English on 33.1%, Ms Ardern on 33.7% and Mr Peters on 6.9%.

Mr Bridges began a nationwide tour, which has a schedule of 70 town hall meetings, on May 3.

The post-budget 2018 poll of 1000 eligible voters (750 interviewed by phone, 250 online) has a margin of error of 3.1%.
