A 2.9 magnitude mini-quake hit Auckland last night, startling some locals, but amusing others around the country.
GeoNet recorded the 9.09pm tremor at a depth of 9km, just east of central Auckland's Mission Bay beach (see GNS map below; use controls top left to zoom in or around).
Media reports had the quake felt as far north as Wellsford and as far south as Papakura. But if social networks were anything to go by, most outside the inner city were unaware it had happened.
There were no immediate reports of injuries, or property damage.
Twitter told the story of the night, from drama to comedy.
