Mt Eden Chamber Music Festival
A Room With a View
Mt Eden Village Centre
October 27-29
Following last year’s inaugural Chamber Music Festival, the Eden Arts Trust has announced its second programme, which will take place in Mt Eden Village during the last weekend of October.
Violinist Simeon Broom has again taken on the role as artistic director for A Room with a View, a series of three distinctly different programmes exploring the settings and stories behind some of the great chamber music works.
"This year, the concerts will explore the development of chamber music from the parlour to the house concert and the musical friendships that inspired the composers and their writing. I'm incredibly excited to have some of the country's foremost musicians performing and the weekend offers a unique chance to hear wonderful music in an ideal chamber setting," Mr Broom says.
The weekend begins with players from the country’s leading baroque specialists NZ Barok, who will perform a programme of early classical chamber music. On Saturday evening there will be an evening of song, with the duo of Swedish mezzo-soprano Catrin Johnsson and New Zealand pianist Rachel Fuller, joined by cellist Edith Salzmann to perform works by Brahms, Grieg and Schumann. The Sunday concert will consist of the early Beethoven Piano Trio in C minor and the ‘Dumky' Trio by Dvorak, performed by the NZ Chamber Soloists.
The hour-long concerts will take place over three early evenings/ afternoons in the Mt Eden Village Centre, an historic church, which has become a centre for a number of performing and visual arts events.
Last year’s event there provided a space not unlike the original settings for such musical soirees in the 19th century. The acoustics of the building provided an excellent sound and a sense of intimacy.
The Eden Arts Trust this year celebrates 30 years of supporting the arts in the wider Mt Eden area. Its many previous initiatives include the annual Artists in Eden Day, Young Artists Awards, Art Schools Award, commissioning public art and literary dinners.
