UPDATEDSellers $2.8m richer in Awaroa beach crowdfunding deal

The team behind a $2.8 million crowdfunding purchase of a beach at Awaroa, Abel Tasman National Park will meet today in Auckland to celebrate.

Promoter Duane Major says the financial details are complete and the final legal work and paperwork is being carried out free by Bell Gully.

All money from the crowdfunding is in a Bell Gully trust account ready to be sent to the vendor’s solicitor.

Those attending the celebration include Bell Gully staff, Givealittle crowdfunding staff, Mr Major and other supporters.

At 4pm Mr Major will press the email communication which shifts the money across to the vendor and the ownership transfers to the Awaroa Beach Property Trust.

ABPT is an interim trust which will exist for as long as it takes to gift the Awaroa beach property as a National Park.

There is also a deed of gift that has been signed between the Her Majesty the Queen and ABPT that guarantees this gift will be given.

There will be another ceremony when it is presented as a gift to the country, possibly at Awaroa.

The process of gifting it into a national park involves consultative and legislative stuff – iwi, commercial interests, district councils.

There were 39,249 public donors pledging $2.5 million with $350,000 from the government.
