Procurement for Auckland's new electric trains is well and truly on track following KiwiRail's release of a request for proposal document, Transport Minister Steven Joyce says.
Eleven companies have been short-listed to manufacture the 38 new electric multiple units.
KiwiRail today released request for proposal documentation for those companies.
KiwiRail was expected to award a tender by the middle of next year and have the first trains operational from 2013, Mr Joyce said.
"I was heartened to hear that a number of bidders have already visited the KiwiRail engineering workshops, I hope others will do the same in the months ahead."
The government has lent $500 million to KiwiRail for the purchase of electric trains.
