Auckland waterfront chairman wants to host the America’s Cup

If Emirates Team New Zealand won the America's cup in San Francisco, Auckland's waterfront chairman Sir Bob Harvey would like to bring the tournament back to the city of sails.

Sir Bob said Auckland already has the infrastructure in place to host the cup once again and have already drawn up a plan.

"We've had a plan for the last month by the way, and I guess the City has too. We've never been so well organised, so well informed, and read to go," he said.

Despite having a plan in place, Sir Bob said Auckland Waterfront has not talked to Emirates Team New Zealand about them but he would like to replace their old base with a new hotel.

"No, no we haven't, but we're about to pull down their old base and put a fantastic hotel there, because I think that the winning of the cup and bringing it to the waterfront will mean that our bids which are coming on the new infrastructure to place in the next month, will mean that the back of the Wynyard Quarter will be enormously successful," he said.

Sir Bob also disagreed with Labour MP Trevor Mallard who said tax payer money should not go towards hosting another America's Cup tournament in Auckland but Auckland ratepayers should instead foot the bill.

"Well he would say that wouldn't he?"

Sir Bob said both tax payers and Auckland ratepayers will need to share the costs of hosting the America's Cup but would not disclose how much it will set them back, he predicts it won't cost billions of dollars.

"I think we will pay something, but the fact is we're not looking at a multibillion dollar process here," he said
