Auckland Airport has taken a leaf out of the book of its client airlines and launched its own loyalty scheme that rewards frequent travellers.
The online-based club, called Strata, will also have a physical presence through the expansion of its Emperor Lounge, which is used by airlines without their own facilities and is open to all travellers for a $50 fee.
Members of Strata Club will build up points according to how much they spend on parking, shopping and other services at the airport.
Jason Delamore, Auckland Airport’s general manager – marketing and technology, says the club initiative arises from customer research.
“One thing that came through clearly was a desire for customers to have their frequency recognised and rewarded, and to have a platform where they could build more personalised benefits that meet their travel needs,” he says.
Benefits include longer access to free wi-fi, parking upgrades and discounts from about two dozen duty free shops and food and beverage outlets in both terminals.
The Emperor Lounge in the international terminal will be renamed the Strata Lounge and entry will be free once club members reach a certain level of spending. The lounge will remain available to all other travellers.
The larger facility will cater for up to 180 on the second level of the terminal building (east and west wings below).
Also like an airline scheme, Strata Club will have four levels, depending on use, and benefits start when spending reaches $250 over a year.
