A law to make it easier to crack down on illegal gang profits has enabled $7.4 million in assets to be seized in its first two months, Police Minister Judith Collins said today.

The Criminal Proceeds (Recovery) Act 2009 came into effect last December and a 22-strong police unit was formed, with a hit list to work on.

The unit had issued six restraining orders, all related to drug offences, and $7.4m in assets was being held by the Official Assignee.

Ms Collins said the law had shown its worth in just two months.

"This sends a very strong signal that this Government is serious about taking away the profits of crime and putting gangs out of business," she said.
