Rorohara
Pie Melon Bay, Waiheke Island
November 6

A major charity art auction on Friday November 6 at Bruce Plested’s Pie Melon Bay retreat will provide a visual treat of Waiheke artists for people at the annual Garden Safari.

Rorohara on Waiheke Island as part of Waiheke Art in the Garden which is a fundraising venture for the Jassy Dean Trust, a charity caring for kids.

The annual event features sculpture, photo montage, pop art and easel painting displayed amid the flora and fauna.

The Garden Preview is a self-guided tour of five art placement gardens and concludes with the auction at Rorohara at 5:30 pm.

Guests will be greeted with a complimentary glass of Man O’War wine or Wild on Waiheke beer on arrival and appetisers by Urban Escargo and oysters from the  Oyster Inn

Greg Dean and a special guest will direct the auction, with music by DJ Gareth Ross

This year’s artists include Denis O'Connor, Ilya Volykhine, Anton Forde, Katie Trinkle-Legge, Emma Hughes, Sally Smith, Virginia King, Paul Brunton, Jeff Thomson, Olivier Duhamel, Jenny McCleod, Stuart Jobling, Zoe Leeb-du Toit, Jackie Guthrie, Mary Ferguson, Pamela Howard-Smith, and Lois Simpson.

One of the two Denis O’Connor works is made from a vintage school chalk board slate with a cut playing card. Like many of the artists’ works he re-uses historic artefacts to recreate new ideas, about, transition, cultural immigration and cultural identity.

This is a foundling card and Denis discovered this historic phenomenon when visiting a London medical museum in 2006. It was originally a place in the 19th century where abandoned children were left. The foundlings were often left with a half card bundled up with them, the mother keeping the other half. The idea that as the foundling grew up and sought their parents the other half of the card would prove identity.

A shuttle bus is on offer to get guests to and from the art auction at Pie Melon Bay. Tickets for the return shuttle are available.

Tickets are $65 on-sale at Paper Plus Waiheke and Eclectic Boutique and online at: iTicket
