Apple has released a software update for iOS 5.0.1 designed to fix the bugs that drained the battery life of some iPhones.
Apple confirmed to NBR last week that a small number of customers had reported lower than expected battery life on iOS 5 devices, saying it had found a few bugs and would release a software update.
The newest version of Apple’s mobile operating system was launched last month with complaints about battery issues starting soon afterwards.
Complaints of faster than expected battery life drain, on iPhone 4S’s, and updated iPhone 4s and 3GS’s have been reported by various media as well as filling Apple’s support forums, with some users experience just a few hours of battery life after updating to iOS 5.
The promised update, iOS 5.0.1, is out today and also involves security patches, one of which fixes a vulnerability demonstrated by a research consultant Charlie Miller, who created an app, distributed by the App Store, which could be used ultimately to download malware onto iPhones without a user’s awareness, ComputerWorld reported.
Mr Miller was subsequently banned from the developers' programme for a year after he told them about the bug (but not about the app), ComputerWorld reported.
The update claims to resolve bugs with documents in the Cloud and for our transtasman cousins, improve voice recognition for Australian users using dictation.
No word on the sultry New Zealand accent, however.
The Guardian reported that developers testing the update said it improved battery life, apparently by reducing the amount of time the phone used location sensing.
