Apple recalls Beats speaker for fire hazard

$520 refund for New Zealand customers | Recall and refund programme will cost Apple somewhere north of $US70 million.

Thu, 04 Jun 2015

Apple has issued a voluntary recall of its Beats by Dr Dre Pill XL wireless speaker.

The recall coincides with a warning notice posted by a US government agency, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

Apple and the CPSC say the speaker's battery can overheat, posing a fire hazard. There have been eight reported incidents of speakers overheating, including one case in which a consumer's finger was burned, according to the CPSC.

The company is offering New Zealand XL buyers a refund or Apple store credit — put at $519 in an Apple statement and at $425 on an Apple website for arranging the return of your XL speaker and compensation.

The Beats Pill XL can be identified by the Beats “b” logo on the speaker grille and the words “beats pill XL” on the handle. The product is sold in five colours: black, metallic sky, pink, titanium and white.

Apple hasn't released any sales figures for the wireless speaker. The CPSC says 233,000 have been sold in the US and Canada — indicating the recall and refund programme will cost Apple somewhere north of $US70 million.

The Beats Pill XL was introduced by Beats by Dr Dre in November 2013. Apple acquired Beats in late 2014.

The recall does not affect any other Apple or Beats products.
