A product refresh from Apple sees a new red option for the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus.
A portion of sales from the new model will go to RED, a global nonprofit fund that operates prevention, treatment and counselling programmes for Aids, with a special focus on eliminating transmission of the virus from mothers to their babies.
Apple says it has donated $US130 million so far over its 10-year partnership with RED.
At the same time, the company has refreshed its 9.7inch iPad (its mainstay iPad) with a brighter display, a lighter form factor and price cut over its predecessor.
The new model is available to New Zealanders on Friday priced from $539 for the 32GB with Wi-Fi model or from $759 for 32GB with Wi-Fi plus cellular.
At the same time, Apple has discontinued the iPad Air – or at least stopped using that brand; with the new standard iPad weighing under 500g, it’s essentially eliminated the need for the Air.
Apple also bumped up storage on the iPhone SE and the iPad mini 4, while keeping the price the same.
The company also introduced Clips today, a new iPhone and iPad app that creates clips that combine videos, photos and music. Clips can be shared via Apple's Messages app, or on Instagram, Facebook and other popular social networks.
The tablet market has been flat for Apple and others overall over the past couple of years, though IDC NZ says the company has been picking up the pace recently with its new iPad Pro.
IDC also reports that Apple recently regained the lead in smartphone shipments in New Zealand for the first time since 2012.
