Relations between the Government and the Christchurch City Council appeared to hit a new high this week.
Recovery Minister, Gerry Brownlee, met the Council and its new mayor, his long-time political opponent, Lianne Dalziel this week.
He told TV3's "The Nation" that it was a very positive meeting.
He thought Ms Dalziel would be good at managing the recovery phase now that demolition had been completed.
And he said that though they had been political rivals in Parliament he had known her for many years outside politics and he was looking forward to a good working relationship.
Mr Brownlee's relationship often clashed with his predecessor, Bob Parker.
Mr Brownlee, in his capacity as Transport Minister, also doubted that new census figures showing a slower rate of growth in Auckland would have much impact on landmark projects like the inner city rail loop or a second harbour crossing.
But he said that he was looking at possibly increasing funding for rural roading.
