2016 Oscars: Golden Globes ignore Mad Max, pick The Revenant, Steve Jobs

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association lived up to its reputation for producing some big surprises.

In a night of surprises, the Golden Globes awards in Hollywood opted to ignore some of the favoured front-runners for the Oscars and plump for films and actors that throw further uncertainty on the eventual outcome.

Top dramatic film, leading actor (Leonardo DiCaprio) and director (Alejandro Iñárritu) went to the historical wilderness epic The Revenant, making some compensation for last year's Globes passing over the same director's Oscar winner, Birdman.

Jennifer Lawrence picked up a Globe for Joy, though few see this performance as better than her ones in two other David O Russell-directed films, Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle.

Similarly, the critics were scathing about Steve Jobs, which won best supporting actress (Kate Winslet) and best screenplay (Aaron Sorkin).

Other choices by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association put Matt Damon and The Martian well in contention for the Oscars, though DiCaprio remains the overall favourite to win his first Oscar.

The best actress category remains open, with Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara (both starriing in the lesbian drama Carol) seen as vying for top honours.

Two of the critics' top picks, Spotlight and The Big Short, failed to win any accolade, while in the television category, Fargo was also overlooked in favour of Amazon's musical satire Mozart in the Jungle.

Streaming giant Netflix's strong lineup of nominations were also subbed as was The Game of Thrones for its fifth season.
