2016 Oscars: DiCaprio wins for first time but 'Spotlight' takes best film

After six previous nominations, Leonardo  DiCaprio finally achieved his first best actor Oscar at the  88th Academy Awards in Hollywood.

While his role in the wilderness epic, shot in extreme conditions, was not enough for best film, The Revenant won the best director award for Alejandro G Iñárritu,

Spotlight, about the Boston Globe's investigation of child abuse in the Catholic Church, won best film.

As expected, Brie Larson won best actress for Room, in which she plays an imprisoned mother with a son,

The critics' pick of Mark Rylance over Sylvester Stallone turned out to be the correct one for best supporting actor, while Alice Vikander topped a strong field for best supporting actress.

The early presentations contained no surprises with screenplay wins for The Big Short and Spotlight. The writers of The Big Short took a swipe at Wall Street and Donald Trump at their presentation, playing to Hollywood's liking for the left field of politics.

Vice President Joe Biden also made an appearance.

As expected, in the technical awards, Mad Max: Fury Road picks the best costume and production design awards as well as sound mixing and editing.
