Govt tables measures to curb buy-now, pay-later ‘debt traps’

Consumer Affairs Minister says tighter regulation is the right thing to do to protect vulnerable consumers.

The buy-now, pay-later sector could be regulated by next year.

The Government proposes to apply tighter lending rules to the unregulated buy-now, pay-later sector in a “proportionate way” to prevent consumers from falling into “debt traps”.

The New Zealand sector is unregulated, with buy-now, pay-later (BNPL) not falling under existing consumer credit
