Auckland’s $460m bet on a low-emission maritime future
City transport agency has allocated as much as 10% of its overall capital spend over the next decade to upgrading its ageing ferry fleet, which accounts for 20% of all public transport emissions.

Background: Auckland’s ferry fleet plies 10 routes, providing access to Waiheke and other outlying islands and the North Shore. But it’s an aging fleet, with a lifespan of about another decade. In a strategy guided by a focus on reducing emissions, the city has ambitious plans to move to an electric and hydrogen future.

EV Maritime says the first of Auckland’s four electrically powered ferries is on track for delivery in December. The second is due to be floated next March.
The two catamarans, each with seated capacity of 200 passengers are being manufactured by McMullin & Wing in Mt Wellington.
