New Cook Strait ferries for Christmas 2029

Government's new plan will save billions, claims Winston Peters.

The Cook Strait ferries will have to last for almost five years before new ferries begin service.

Rail Minister Winston Peters has announced the replacement ferries for the ageing interislander fleet will have both road and rail decks.

While there had been suggestions the ferries would not be rail-enabled, Peters said having road and rail decks would be more efficient for single shunt movements
