Government rushes through repeal of exploration ban

Legislation will also reinsert that its purpose is to promote, not manage, oil and gas exploration.

The former Labour Government introduced the offshore exploration ban in 2018.

The Government expects to remove the ban on offshore oil and gas exploration by Christmas.

The Crown Minerals Amendment Bill was having its first reading in Parliament today and will have a shortened select committee process so it can become law sooner.
