UPDATE (6.30pm):

In a briefing early this evening Prime Minister Chris Hipkins said Cyclone Gabrielle was the most damaging storm since Cyclone Bola in 1988.

Hipkins flew back to Wellington from Auckland late this afternoon before meeting with officials and Emergency Management Minister Kieran
