Auckland foods tycoon and bird-lover Gary Lane is putting his money into ensuring his golf course is free from predators.
Lane is the former owner of Lanes Biscuits, Hansells and Healtheries but sold out of the companies in 2006 for an estimated $200 million.
These days he is on the board of Predator Free 2050 Ltd, the entity set up to implement the government’s pest-free programme initiated when Sir John Key was prime minister.
Lane is well qualified, having already built his own sanctuary fence around the Wairakei golf course, which he bought in 2009.
Since then he has invested millions of dollars erecting a 5.5km boundary fence to exclude all pests and predators.
He maintains business interests through a majority ownership of US-registered Antipodean Pharmaceuticals, the company behind MitoQ, a breakthrough and revolutionary topical antioxidant therapy that has an anti-ageing and rejuvenation effect on the skin.
He has properties on some of Auckland's most recognisable streets and retains interests in super-yacht builder Alloy Yachts.
