Contact secures gas for peaker plants

After failing to sell its NZ assets, OMV agrees new contract for Pohokura gas out to 2032.

OMV’s Pohokura gas field is 4.5km off Taranaki.

Electricity generator and retailer Contact Energy says it has contracted further gas supplies from OMV’s Pohokura field from January 2026 to December 2032.

The supply allows the continued operation of Contact’s 200MW gas peaker plants at Stratford in Taranaki, but not its 330MW Combined Cycle
