Sweet thief: Chocolate prices up 20% on a year ago

Food prices rise in year to August, while consumers swipe and spend more after tax and OCR cuts.

Not so sweet: the price of chocolate has contributed to the annual rise in food prices.

Consumers continue to spend more at the supermarket checkouts, as official data revealed further gains for food prices.    

Statistics New Zealand data out today showed food prices rose 0.4% in the year ended August. That followed a 0.6% increase in the year ended July.
