January boost to card spending may be short-lived

Electronic card spending rises in January, but economists say household budgets are under pressure this year.

New Zealanders’ appetite to spend bounced back in January, according to data out today from Stats NZ.

Figures show spending using debit, credit and charge cards climbed a seasonally adjusted 2.6%, by $171 million last month, compared with December’s fall.
