Consumers show Christmas pessimism: Westpac

Westpac McDermott Miller survey at the weakest level since 1988.

Survey respondents expect bad economic times ahead, not just over the next 12 months, but next five years.

Consumers end the year utterly pessimistic, adding fuel to the fire of an economic slowdown and a recession next year.

The Westpac McDermott Miller Consumer Confidence Index fell sharply in December, dropping 12 points to 75.6.

That’s the lowest level of confidence since the survey began in 1988.
