Trustpower Ltd has announced the appointment of Michael Smith to its board of directors, effective November 18, 2021.
Smith lives in Tauranga and brings extensive governance experience in both private and listed entities. He currently chairs Craigs Investment Partners Superannuation Management Ltd, among other directorships. He was also a director of Port of Tauranga Ltd for 16 years, during which it grew substantially to become New Zealand’s pre-eminent port, with a market cap of $3 billion.
Smith holds an LLB from Victoria University of Wellington and has practised as a commercial lawyer since 1985. He was a partner at Tauranga law firm Holland Beckett Solicitors from 1985, becoming a consultant in 1995 in order to pursue external business opportunities. He is now a professional director and fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Directors.
Smith will join the board as the representative for the Tauranga Energy Consumer Trust (TECT) and their wholly owned subsidiary TECT Holdings Ltd, which is Trustpower’s second-largest shareholder with 26.8% of voting shares.
In appointing Smith to the board, TECT Holdings Ltd exercises its power of appointment under clause 25.3(b) of Trustpower’s constitution.
