New Zealand seafood company Sanford Ltd (SAN) has announced the appointment of Mark Cairns as an additional member of its board of directors, bringing the company’s total number of directors to seven.
He will join the Sanford’s board effective July 1, 2021.
Sanford chair Sir Rob McLeod said he is delighted with the appointment and believed: “Mark is a highly talented person with the track record, experience and skills that will strongly complement the Sanford board and add significant value to the company.”
Cairns is chief executive at Ports of Tauranga, but is due to retire from this position on June 30, 2021. He is also a director of Meridian Energy, Northport Ltd, CODA Group Ltd, and Quality Marshalling Ltd; he recently joined the board of Freightways Ltd.
Before joining Ports of Tauranga, he was chief executive of C3 Ltd (formerly Toll Owens Ltd) for five years.
McLeod said: “Marks’ interest in becoming a Sanford director reflects extremely well on Sanford as Mark is a widely respected CEO in New Zealand due to the results and performance of Port of Tauranga under Mark’s leadership.”
Cairns said he was attracted to Sanford because of its strong industry leadership in sustainable fishing. “As a passionate fisherman and diver, I admire Sanford’s focus on enabling healthy oceans and protecting and enhancing the environment.”
Cairns has a first class honours degree in civil engineering from University of Auckland, a degree in business studies and a master of management from Massey University. He is a fellow of Engineering New Zealand and a chartered member of the Institute of Directors. In 2019, Cairns received the prestigious Caldwell Partners Leadership Award from the Institute of Finance Professionals.
He is considered by the board to be an independent director.
