Microsoft bolsters public sector team from within and from the Brussels office.
Microsoft has announced two appointments that will continue to strengthen its relationships with public sector clients and government officials. Emma Barrett has been appointed public sector director, while Maciej Surowiec joins from Microsoft Brussels to be government affairs lead.
Barrett joined Microsoft in 2017 as enterprise channel manager after a 13-year stint at Intergen. In her time with the organisation, she has led the partner co-sell programme that has brought hundreds of partner IP solutions and supporting services to customers, unlocking additional value to both customers and the partner ecosystem. For this, she has gained recognition from the industry at large, most recently taking the gold medal at the Reseller News Awards for Channel Excellence.
“The magic for me of working in the ICT industry has always been getting to work with, and make an impact on, people – whether it’s our customers and their end users, our partners, teams or peers,” she said. “We are fortunate to have a very forward-thinking government, encouraging and enabling innovation across the board to create a better future for all New Zealanders.”
Barrett will start her new role on December 1, taking over from enterprise director, Vanessa Sorenson, who has been acting public sector director.
Maciej Surowiec is currently a member of the Europe government affairs team, where he supports a range of policy issues, such as cybersecurity and AI, that align well with the work Microsoft is leading in New Zealand. Surowiec will start on November 1.

Barrie Sheers, Managing Director at Microsoft, believes both appointments will be strong additions to the public sector team.

“Maciej brings a wealth of international experience. I’m sure we’ll learn a lot from him, and we know our key government stakeholders will enjoy working with someone of his calibre.”
