Former academic and consultant economist to take over from Anna Rawlings next month.
John Small will be the new chair of the Commerce Commission, taking over from Anna Rawlings on December 5.
Announcing the appointment, Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs David Clark said Small had made a valuable contribution to the Commission’s work as associate member and full member since December 2018.
“His career has also included work as an academic, adviser on policy and regulatory reviews, lay member of the High Court, and now as a regulator.
“The Commerce Commission plays a vitally important role in ensuring our markets are competitive and working well for New Zealand consumers. It has done a fantastic job of this to date and I’m certain with Dr Small at the helm, we will see this legacy continue.”
Before joining the Commission, Small was an economist with consultancy Covec for 17 years, following a 15-year academic career, latterly as head of economics at Auckland University. His term as chair will run until June 2025.
Clark thanked Rawlings for her work as chair since 2019.
“Ms Rawlings has demonstrated great leadership, especially during times of significant challenges to the economy, including the Covid-19 pandemic and global uncertainty.
“She has been front and centre for three major market studies into fuel, supermarkets, and building supplies – where she has demonstrated time and again her ability to communicate complex market analysis and recommendations in an understandable way.”
