The former prime minister will take over the role in June in Paris.

Thu, 31 Jan 2019

The Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative’s (EITI) board has appointed former prime minister Helen Clark as incoming chairwoman.

Ms Clark will take up the role in June,  replacing former Swedish prime minister Fredrik Reinfeldt, following his three-year term.

The EITI is an international multi-stakeholder body that promotes the open and accountable management of oil, gas and mineral resources. It has 51 member countries.

Ms Clark served three successive terms as prime minister of New Zealand from 1999-2008. She became UNDP Administrator for two terms from 2009-2017 and was the first woman to lead the organisation. She was also the chair of the United Nations Development Group, a committee of the heads of all UN funds, programmes and departments working on development issues.

EITI chairpeople are appointed for three-year terms. Among previous people to have held the role are former UK secretary of state for international development Clare Short and Transparency International founder Peter Eigen.
