FMA exec picked to head SFO

Karen Chang to take over as CEO from Julie Read.

Tue, 22 Feb 2022

Financial Markets Authority acting general counsel Karen Chang will be the next director and chief executive of the Serious Fraud Office.

Her appointment was announced today by deputy public service commissioner Helene Quilter.

Chang was appointed FMA acting general counsel in September last year when the incumbent Liam Mason became acting CEO.

She was previously head of enforcement after joining the regulator in 2017 from law firm Meredith Connell, where she was a senior Crown prosecutor.

Chang has extensive experience in commercial litigation, regulatory litigation and criminal prosecution, in New Zealand, Australia and New York.

Quilter said: “Ms Chang is a proven leader in the field of financial crime law enforcement and has worked closely with the SFO on a number of investigations.”

Chang has been appointed for a four year term from April 26.

She takes over the SFO from Julie Read, who has served as CEO since October 2013.
