Criminal barrister takes top job at Auckland District Law Society

Marie Dyhrberg, QC, was elected unopposed.

Mon, 09 Mar 2020

Prominent criminal barrister Marie Dyhrberg, QC, is the new president of the Auckland District Law Society after being elected unopposed for a one-year term.

ADLS is an independent membership organisation representing 5000 practising lawyers, legal executives and law students, based all over New Zealand.

Marie Dyhrberg, QC, is a senior barrister specialising in criminal law and appears regularly at the District Court, High Court and Court of Appeal in New Zealand. She has been involved in some of New Zealand’s highest-profile cases.  She was appointed as a Queen’s Counsel in 2014.

She has also held positions of leadership in legal organisations, including being the first female Chair of the International Bar Association’s criminal law committee and first female president of the Criminal Bar Association.

“I am excited about the opportunities for the organisation.  A focus I intend to continue Is the issue of more diversity in our profession,” Ms Dyhrberg said.

“When I established my own firm in 1986 I was just the second woman in New Zealand to establish a legal practice.  We have come some way since then but there is a lot more to do to encourage our profession to be representative of the society in which we live.

“The ADLS also plays an important leadership role in supporting career development and facilitating new thinking across the legal profession.  This has been a particular interest for me for many years.”
