Cooper and Company announces director of hospitality

The new position will see Garth Solly based at The Landing, a 405ha Bay of Islands property with luxury accommodation.

Thu, 21 Nov 2019

Cooper and Company has appointed a new director of hospitality at The Landing, a 405ha Bay of Islands property that includes a vineyard and luxury accommodation offering.

Garth Solly is a senior hotel executive with more than 20 years of commercial hospitality experience, including working in and opening hotels across Australasia, India and Thailand.

The position of director of hospitality is a new one, created in response to the increasing growth of The Landing as a luxury accommodation offering.

Solly’s position includes a leadership role in Cooper and Company’s growing and hospitality endeavours. In the immediate future this includes working with the team at The Hotel Britomart and, in particular, on the guest experience at The Landing Suites, five luxurious suites that will occupy the top floors of the hotel, now under construction and due for completion in mid-2020.

Cooper and Company chief executive Matthew Cockram said, “The Landing Suites at The Hotel Britomart are an opportunity for us to bring some of the unique experiences of The Landing that our guests value so highly into the heart of Britomart.”

The new role marks Solly’s return to the Bay of Islands, where he was previously general manager of internationally acclaimed Robertson Lodges of New Zealand, based at The Lodge at Kauri Cliffs. The Farm at Cape Kidnappers in Hawke’s Bay and Matakauri Lodge in Queenstown were also under his purview as part of the Robertson portfolio.

Most recently, Solly was general manager at QT Wellington where, under his stewardship, the hotel was listed in the top seven hotels in the Australasian region by Conde Nast Traveller – the only New Zealand hotel named on the list.

Solly’s time in New Zealand lodges was preceded by 10 years’ service with Intercontinental Hotels Group across New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, India and Thailand, operating a mix of corporate and leisure hotels and resorts.
