Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) was an idea first mooted by Australian prime minister Bob Hawke, who outlined his vision during a speech in Korea in 1989, planting the seed that he hoped would grow into a platform for consultation and cooperation throughout the Asia Pacific region.
