The National Business Review is once again offering free access to all its award-winning political and business news and analysis to thousands of university students across the country.
Last year, NBR launched free premium access to all our content – valued at $499 a year – for all students at any New Zealand university.
We delivered award-winning journalism, ranging from scoops and investigations to yearly staples such as our flagship NBR List. We also launched a new category in 2024 named NBR Focus, providing you with several week-long, in-depth series providing commentary on influential industries, advisers, and issues affecting New Zealand business: think The Accountants, Dealmakers, GMO, Infrastructure, Building Supplies and Hawke’s Bay’s recovery from Cyclone Gabrielle.
Thousands of students across the country took up our offer of a free subscription in 2024, and its success means we are once again offering university students free access this year.
Students can sign up to the offer here.
NBR publishers Todd and Jackie Scott said: “Like New Zealand universities, NBR is committed to inspiring the next generation of business leaders. What better way to nurture this ambition than by offering university students serious independent business news and analysis in 2025, at no cost.”
As well, NBR has partnered for the first time with the University of Auckland Investment Club, providing content for its Bulletin online magazine and publishing selected pieces of its work on NBR. We also invite students at other universities to contact us at editor@nbr.co.nz about contributing work during 2025.
The move follows NBR last year making five senior hires as we look to ramp up, widen, and evolve the content we bring to our valued member subscribers. That included the appointment of award-winning journalist and presenter Mike McRoberts as NBR’s Te Ao Māori editor; the hire of veteran broadcaster Simon Shepherd to launch the NBR Podcast; Grant Walker’s recruitment as chief of strategy; and Brent Melville and Nicholas Pointon as senior journalists.
NBR also went four in a row at last year’s New Zealand Shareholders’ Association journalism awards, with senior journalist Tim Hunter named the overall Business Journalist of the Year for the third time.
It was the fourth successive year NBR has won the overall award, following Pointon’s win in 2023, Hunter’s win in 2022, and Maria Slade’s win the year before. Hunter also won the top gong in 2019.
Kate McVicar was named emerging journalist of the year.
NBR is proudly 100% subscriber funded, with no advertising, sponsorship, or government funding.
