Landfill levy leap won't fly as plastic packaging deterrent, industry players say

Pricing signals would work better than a flat tax on garbage, economist says.

Expanding the country's landfill levy flat rate from $20 a tonne possibly up to $140 a tonne is too blunt a tool, according to John Pask, a Business NZ economist and former member of the Waste Advisory Board.

He was commenting on a Coalition proposal to increase the levy on landfill dumping
