Maria Slade

Maria Slade is the NZ Shareholders Association 2021 Business Journalist of the Year. She was also the New Zealand runner-up in the 2021 Citi Journalism Awards.

Her first job out of journalism school was with NBR, and she rejoined us in 2020 after a successful career as a reporter, editor, author and commentator. She has worked for most major New Zealand media outlets including the New Zealand Herald, Stuff, NewstalkZB and Radio New Zealand. Her most recent role was as business editor of the independent current affairs website, The Spinoff. She is the author of a how-to book for house hunters, Buyer Beware: A New Zealand Home Buyer’s Guide, and once got so passionate about the state of the New Zealand wool industry that she found funding to attend a Las Vegas carpet conference (the story won an award).

Maria’s career has taken her from print to radio, business to news, but it is business writing that has most captured her attention. One of her roles is editor of the annual The NBR List.
