Aussie supermarkets could face A$4b fines under mandatory code

Making the code mandatory is the Australian Government’s toughest response so far to the issue of supermarket competition.

Coles and Woolworths have a combined share of about 60% of the Australian grocery market.

A code of conduct for supermarkets, currently voluntary, will become mandatory and companies that transgress that code will face significant fines, under recommendations accepted in full by the Australian Government.   

The code, which will apply to supermarket with revenues of at least A$5 billion
