Ailing Labour MP Parekura Horomia (62) has died at his Mangatuna home.
The Ikaroa Rawhiti MP and widower is reported to have been unwell for some time.
He has missed several recent high-profile events, including Ratana celebrations and Waitangi Day in the Bay of Islands.
His family had earlier today issued a statement requesting privacy and saying he was at his home convalescing.
"The whanau of Hon. Parekura Horomia is very humbled by all the love, support and kind wishes for their grandfather, father, brother and uncle," it said.
The Maori Affairs Minister from 2002-08, he has struggled with his health in recent years.
Mr Parekura was first elected MP for Ikaroa Rawhiti in 1999 and was highly respected for his widespread links to Maoridom.
